Geo Simplify

Introduction
The GEO Simplify tool allows the user to reduce the polygon count of a model with the click of a button and the movement of a slider. It is an extremely powerful tool which can be used to achieve a number of goals:

  • Simplification of large/polygon rich models
  • Semi-automatic Level of Detail (LOD) generation

Use Geo Simplify to go from this...

       14,670 Polygons (100%)

To This

16,740 Polygons (11%)

845 Polygons (5.7%)

Other model examples...

129,596 Polygons (100%)

15,585 Polygons (10.52%)

34,681 Polygons (100%)

3,958 Polygons (10.5%)

Also ideal for terrain models...

32,258 Polygons (100%)

642 Polygons (1.9%)

The Simplify Tool actually consists of two plugins:

  • Simplification Tool

  • Simplification Importance Tool

The Simplification Tool is the heart of the GEO Simplify tool. This tool generates the
lower polygon count models. Simply select the portion of the model to simplify (or the entire model if nothing is selected), start the tool with the click of an icon and the tool will start processing the model for simplification.

Once the initial processing has completed, the user can drag the resolution slider to specify the desired reduction percent (of the original model or selection). The entire process is interactive and reversible.

The Simplification Importance tool is a utility to allow the user to further control the simplification process. No automated tool will be able to exactly predicate what features
are important and what features aren’t. This tool allows the user to specify high and low importance features and areas by directly painting on the geometry surface. User input is then incorporate into the automatic reduction process.
