Carbon Graphics Announces Geo STUDIO Pro 3.5

Automatic LOD generation, a modern OBJ pipeline with PBR, and a faster fixed‑function emulation shader headline the release—plus dozens of workflow upgrades and fixes

September 17, 2025 — Carbon Graphics today announced Geo STUDIO Pro 3.5, a major update to its

professional 3D modeling and simulation tool used across visual simulation, training, and real‑time graphics

pipelines. Version 3.5 focuses on production speed and interoperability: automatic Level‑of‑Detail (LOD)

creation, a rewritten Wavefront OBJ importer/exporter with PBR material awareness, and a new

fixed‑function emulation shader for high‑performance rendering of legacy content—along with extensive

usability improvements, stability fixes, and fresh tutorial videos.

With 3.5, we focused on real‑world throughput—automatic LODs you can trust, a modern OBJ pipeline

that preserves materials and transparency, and a seamless way to render and edit legacy assets at speed,”

said the Geo STUDIO Pro team at Carbon Graphics. “It’s a practical upgrade for artists and engineers who

need results fast, without sacrificing fidelity.”

Highlights in Geo STUDIO Pro 3.5

Automatic Level of Detail (LOD) generation

  • Generate lower‑detail geometry per RenderGroup at preset reduction targets (50%, 60%, 70%, 80%) to retain material boundaries and texture assignments.

  • Integrates with MeshLab; the installer includes a full MeshLab package. A new Open Current File in MeshLab command helps you inspect and validate exports before processing.

  • Auto‑generated LODs are saved as Wavefront OBJ next to source models for easy reuse and copy/paste into your scene under LOD nodes.

Modernized Wavefront OBJ pipeline

  • Importer rewritten around TinyObjLoader for greater format coverage and robustness.

  • Creates PBR materials from .MTL definitions, and automatically groups transparent polygons for correct alpha‑blend ordering.

  • Exporter updated to correctly convert Basic, Extended, and PBR materials, and to export only the active LOD/Switch branches.

Faster rendering of legacy content

  • The manual fast‑path has been replaced with a fully automatic fixed‑function emulation shader, delivering high performance while honoring per‑face controls (draw style, shade model, face/vertex colors, etc.).

  • Expanded multi‑texturing support across modes: MODULATE, BLEND, REPLACE, DECAL & DETAIL. Detail textures include distance and scale controls for smooth, controllable blend‑in.

New tools & workflow upgrades

  • MergeRenderGroups SceneGraph plugin: consolidate children of multiple RenderGroups into a single, user‑named group for easier organization.

  • Cylindrical UV Mapping tool—rewritten: optional planar caps with threshold angle, U/V scaling, seam rotation, and major‑axis snap.

  • Move Vertex tool—rewritten for click‑drag interactivity with comprehensive undo.

  • Toggle Selection Display Hint (menu & key 5) during tool operations.

  • Trackball snap shortcuts: ALT+R (right/YZ), ALT+T (top/XZ), ALT+F (front/XY).

  • Texture orientation fixes: flip the current or all images if OpenGL origin differs.

  • “Select As Polys” UI tweak makes converting group selections to polygon selections more discoverable.

Compatibility & importer improvements

  • Aechelon HIE importer fixes and a complete MultiTexShader rewrite as a modern GLSL‑based node integrated with Geo’s pipeline.

  • PrimSet nodes (equivalent to OpenFlight's Mesh node) now support coplanar decal (subface) polygons like Polygon/Mesh types.

Stability & quality

  • Numerous fixes across copy/paste between files, material deletion edge cases, attribute editor thumbnails, behavior system copy/paste, behavior assignment to non‑RenderGroups, closing files with Behavior Action Editor open, and more.

  • Resolved per‑frame memory leaks to improve long‑session stability.

Learn fast

  • Geo STUDIO Pro 3.5 ships with short video tutorials, including:

    • Overview;

    • Scene Interaction & Tool Grabbers;

    • Materials, Textures & Texture Mapping;

    • Using Automatic LOD;

    • Using DCS Nodes;

    • Behaviors & the StateMachine Editor;

    • Driving Behaviors From Simulation Data.

Availability

Geo STUDIO Pro 3.5 is available now. Existing customers with current maintenance can update at no additional cost. The standard installer includes MeshLab; no separate download is required.

The new Geo Studio Pro 3.5 release shows how much modern software relies on precise modeling and real-time rendering. Its improved stability and enhanced performance are a real step forward for digital designers. This reminds me of https://www.gambody.com/ a 3D printing marketplace where artists sell and buy STL files of video game and comic book characters. Both tools push creativity beyond the screen, turning virtual models into something tangible. 3D printing makes the leap from idea to reality smoother, and platforms like Gambody prove just how powerful that bridge can be.
